Based on the request of many teachers, we are happy to invite you to participate in an online training. In the online training we will learn and delve into the same materials that will be at the face-to-face training institutes.

For whom are these courses intended?

  • Teachers of iTaLAM 1-4 who cannot attend the face-to-face training institutes
  • New teachers who are not familiar with with the TaL AM methodology for teaching Hebrew language and Jewish identity
  • IT professionals, Hebrew Coordinators and anyone that manages the student registration in the iTaLAM program User Management System(UMS)

Is it preferable to participate in the face-to-face training institute or the online course?

We recommend participation in the face-to-face training institutes because there is no substitute for the personal touch.However, at times, due to various circumstances it is not possible to attend. For these cases we are providing an alternate training in an online course. The online course described will be completed over the course of the year and the cost listed covers the entire course.

What preparations are requested of the school?

  • Allow the teachers to meet LIVE in a quiet room - several times a year on dates which will be known in advance, the dates will be announced by May 31, 2018
  • The courses will open on July 2, 2018
  • Allow the teachers to learn on their own several hours as laid out in the table below (offline sessions)
  • The teacher will prepare short assignments for each online and offline session

What are the courses, what will be taught and how much will it cost?

Teacher training is built on five courses at different levels depending on the teachers needs. Each category of teacher will receive a combination of these courses according to their needs as described in the chart:

Course 1: Fundamentals of the Method - From the research on the brain to the acquisition of language, why teach Hebrew in Hebrew, language skills and communication channels. Course content according to the class. (up to 8 sessions)
Course 2: Course curriculum per grade (according to the different needs of each school): Daily Life, Holidays, Shabbat and Torah (For each grade, per track, up to 18 meetings)
Course 3: The Digital Teacher: How to begin? About the added value to the student and the teacher when integrating the technology into teaching, annual planning according to the time allowance, the sign language of iTaLAM, the digital teacher - rules and organization, construction of data-based learning, prioritization and selection of materials from TaL AM and iTaLAM. (up to 8 meetings)
Course 4: Learning Management System (LMS) - Differentiated Learning - How?

Beginners: How to easily differentiate instruction with activities and games at various levels in iTaLAM.

Advanced: We will demonstrate how to differentiate instruction using blended learning to strengthen the various communication channels in the classroom.

Course 5: User Management System (UMS)

Note: Those purchased Course 2 (Course Curriculum per Grade) will receive this course at no additional cost.

40 Hours for a Beginning Teacher - $1000 annual fee per teacher or $1800 per iTaLAM grade as a school package (no limit on the number of teachers)
10 Hours for an Experienced Teacher** in the track - $480 annual fee per teacher or $1000 per iTaLAM grade as a school package (no limit on the number of teachers)
18 Hours for a teacher teaching a new grade in iTaLAM - $720 annual fee per teacher or $1600 per iTaLAM grade as a school package (no limit to the number of teachers)
9 Hours for an Experienced Teacher who needs to learn just Torah: Bereishit, Noah and Lech Lecha are currently available - $250 $150 annual fee for a teacher per Parasha
8 Hours for an Administrator or Coordinator - $320 annual fee

How does the price compare to the face-to-face training institutes?

As is customary in the world of professional development, online training is reduced by about 30% of the cost of face-to-face training, there is no need to get a substitute teacher, flights and hotel.

Online Course – Connecting to the Hebrew Language and Jewish Heritage

iTaLAM 2nd Grade Hebrew Teacher Training

 

Introduction:

 

Teachers of Hebrew Language and Jewish Heritage in the Diaspora are expected to teach Hebrew as a language of heritage that shapes Jewish identity. This goal poses challenges which forms the basis for this online training.

 

The material that will be taught in the Hebrew Language unit called “Chayei Yom Yom” is divided into two main topics: “In the Classroom” and “In the House”. In this unit the students meet and get to know their classmates and they get better acquainted with the students in the virtual class that simulates the real class, they learn the cycle of the day in respect to dressing, washing and proper nutrition while emphasizing the Jewish laws and customs associated with everyday Jewish life.

 

The knowledge base for teaching Judaism, called “Chagim”, focuses on preparations for each holiday and the Torah laws associated with the holiday. By teaching the preparations for the holiday, the symbols associated with the holiday are reviewed and the main concepts and ideas of the holiday which were taught in 1st Grade. The students also learn the Torah source of the main laws that are observed during the holiday, the historical background of the holiday and the connection between the holiday and the land of Israel.

 

Objectives:

  1. To learn and to identify the main ideas that are the foundation of the unit being taught: Teaching Hebrew as a language of heritage and communication, involvement with the Jewish Holidays and the basic information about the holiday including the laws and customs as a component to shape Jewish identity.
  2. To recognize and understand the concept of Blended Learning, that allows for differentiated instruction, independent learning and responsibility, flexible learning and other 21st century skills.
  3. Practice preparing blended learning lesson including, digital and traditional learning and which you will share with your colleagues.
  4. Use the LMS to prepare differentiated lessons, based on data, appropriate for the different levels of students in the class.

2nd Grade Meetings – Topics and Descriptions
1. Hebrew as a language to shape identity and Chag Sukkot

In this meeting we will discuss the value and meaning of learning the Hebrew language, “Hebrew is the language of the Jewish nation”. We will work on grammar, acquiring the past tense, through the teaching of Chag Sukkot and we will discuss the learning process – “What and with what do we learn?” We will introduce the materials for the unit and the important vocabulary needed for learning in the classroom.

2. Introducing communication skills in Hebrew and the unit “How we Learn”

In this meeting we will deal with communication skills like: reading and listening comprehension. In addition, we will learn about the materials available in the “How we Learn” unit. We will discuss ways to teach a story with the help of stories available in the unit.

3. Ways to teach a story and Chanuka

In this meeting we will learn about Chanuka and its laws and customs. We will become familiar with the materials and discuss ways to connect and make a connection between the home and school (blessings for lighting the candles and songs).

We will also familiarize ourselves with the materials for the unit “By Myself in the Classroom”

4. Instructions for Creative Projects, Chodesh Shevat and Seder Hayom

In this meeting we will learn how to prepare the students for creative writing activities. We will work with the reports generated from the activities and learn how to analyze the data. We will also familiarize ourselves with the materials for Chodesh Shevat, Tu Bishvat and the unit “Order of the Day”.

5. A Focused Introduction and Purim

In this meeting we will learn the importance and role of a focused introduction in the pathway to learning. We will demonstrate the focused introduction with the use of the Purim unit. We will become familiar with the Purim materials, the story of the Megilah, and the laws and customs associated with the Purim holiday. Finally we will learn about and prepare for the upcoming end of year assessment test for 2nd grade.

6. Memory retrieval and Pesach

This meeting will delve into understanding the pathway to learning and understanding the importance of memory and memory retrieval. We will discuss the ways to build memories from year to year. We will also learn about the materials in the Pesach unit and preparations for the presentation of the story of the Exodus from Egypt.

7. Israel, Zionism and Heritage

In this meeting we will delve in and learn the unit about Israel. We will learn about the map of Israel and the materials in the unit. We will demonstrate and create a blended lesson. In addition, we will take a look at the unit of Sefirat HaOmer – how we count, and what Sefirat HaOmer signifies.

The material that will be taught in the Hebrew Language unit called “Chayei Yom Yom” deals with four main topics:

  1. “The Memory Box” that help students remember what they learned in the past and helps them remember new information they acquire throughout the year.
  2. Rules for learning that help students learn successfully in the classroom.
  3. The concept of multiple Intelligences that help us think, learn and accomplish multiple types of tasks successfully.
  4. A deeper acquaintance with the various students in the class including their character and hobbies that are unique to each individual.

 

In the holidays unit for 3rd grade students develops multi-directional understanding of the history behind the holidays, the laws and the customs of each holiday. The students also learn the blessings that are said in greeting to their family and friends that are unique for each holiday.

In this meeting we will deal with the importance of a targeted introduction to every lesson. We will analyze blended learning and learn about Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We will also learn about the Four Minim used on Sukkot and how and where they grow in the land of Israel.

In this meeting we will deal with defining and developing communication skills such as reading comprehension and listening comprehension. Meeting 3: Pathway to memory and learning and Chanukah

Before learning new material it is important to recall what we already know! In this meeting we will learn about pathways to memory and learning in connection to Chanukah. We will learn the important connection between “in the past” and “our time period”. We will discuss the construction of collective memories as a platform for Jewish identity. We will also learn about the laws and customs associated with the holiday of Chanukah.

Meeting 4:  “Smart in so many ways” and Tu BiShevat

A unique and fascinating unit introducing for the first time the various types of wisdom found in different types of people. We will become acquainted with the various types of wisdom, identify the types of wisdom in exemplary figures in Judaism, discover and become aware of personal wisdom and abilities and learn about the importance of awareness of personal strengths and the ability to acquire and develop additional wisdom!

We will also familiarize ourselves with the materials for Chodesh Shevat and Tu Bishvat.

Meeting 5: “Ask the Expert” and the Story of the Megilah

In this meeting we will learn about Purim – the story of the Megilah. We will refresh our memory by using the “Memory Box” of Purim. We will also dedicate time to share questions and answers from the field.

Meeting 6: Oral Communication and Pesach

In this meeting we will learn methods to encourage oral communication in preparation for the Pesach Seder and preparing the students to understand and read from the Hagaddah of Pesach. We will learn about the pathway from slavery to freedom. We will become familiar with the laws and customs of the holiday. We will teach the haggadah of Pesach and how to prepare with the students a “Dvar Torah” to give at the seder in Hebrew! Finally we will understand the story of the Exodus from Egypt.

Meeting 7:The Unit about Israel and the Map of the Land of Israel

In this meeting we will learn about new tools for teaching Hebrew, delving into and developing communication skills, and we will learn about the materials and main ideas in the Israel unit. We will understand the connection between the State of Israel and the promise of the land of Israel that Hashem promised to our forefathers. We will be introduced to Herzl, the visionary of the State of Israel and the character of Ben Gurion and his vision. We will learn about the immigration to Israel and we will be aware of the connection between the Jewish people in all generations in the diaspora to the land of Israel.
